Six Weeks Pregnant: Tiny Beginnings

At six weeks, your baby is about the size of a lentil, measuring around 0.25 inches (4-5 mm) long. This is a crucial stage of development: the heart has started beating, and the brain, spinal cord, and blood vessels are beginning to form. Tiny buds that will eventually grow into arms and legs are also starting to appear.

Ultrasound at 6 Weeks:

During an ultrasound, you might see a tiny flicker of your baby’s heartbeat, which is one of the earliest and most reassuring signs of life. The baby will appear as a small dot within the gestational sac, and the heartbeat can usually be detected through a transvaginal ultrasound.

Getting Ready for the Ultrasound:

For a transabdominal ultrasound at this early stage, having a full bladder can help produce a clearer image, so use the bathroom 30 minutes before your appointment, then drink about 32 ounces of water and avoid using bathroom until the end of your ultrasound session . If you’re having a transvaginal ultrasound, no special preparation is needed.

What’s Happening in Mom’s Body:

By six weeks, many moms start experiencing early pregnancy symptoms like nausea (often called morning sickness), fatigue, and breast tenderness. Hormones like hCG are rising rapidly, which can also lead to mood swings and other changes. It’s important to start taking prenatal vitamins if you haven’t already, as they provide essential nutrients for your baby’s growth and development.

Next Steps:

This is also a great time to start looking for an OB/GYN, midwife, or doula to support you through your pregnancy journey. Establishing care early ensures you get the best guidance and support from the start.
