Everything you need to know about your first ultrasound, when you can see your baby's heartbeat, and why timing matters.
Finding out you're pregnant is one of the most exciting moments in life. Naturally, one of the first questions many parents ask is:
"When should I get my first pregnancy ultrasound?"
At True Ultrasound, this is one of the most common questions we hear. Understanding the right timing can help set realistic expectations and make your first visit much less stressful.
How Is Pregnancy Dated?
For most pregnancies, we calculate your pregnancy based on the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP).
Although many women use ovulation trackers, fertility apps, smart watches, or wearable devices that estimate ovulation, these tools are still only estimates.
The most accurate way to date an early pregnancy is with an ultrasound.
The exception is IVF pregnancies, where the embryo transfer date provides a very accurate gestational age.
What Can You See at 5 Weeks?
Around 5 weeks, it's common to see:
✔️ A gestational sac
Sometimes you may also see:
✔️ A yolk sac
At this stage, it is usually too early to see an embryo or heartbeat, and that can be completely normal.

What Can You See at 6 Weeks?
By approximately 6 weeks, many pregnancies will show:
✔️ Gestational sac
✔️ Yolk sac
✔️ Fetal pole (baby)
✔️ Heartbeat
This is often one of the most emotional moments for expecting parents.
Why Didn't We See a Heartbeat?
This is probably the biggest concern we hear.
You come in believing you're 6 weeks pregnant…
…but your ultrasound only shows a gestational sac.
Should you panic?
Usually, no.

There are several reasons why your pregnancy may be measuring a few days earlier than expected.
These include:
• Later ovulation
• Later implantation
• Longer or shorter menstrual cycles
• Uncertainty about the exact first day of your last period
Even a difference of 2 to 5 days can completely change what we expect to see on an ultrasound.
Sometimes the heartbeat simply isn't visible yet because it's still too early.
What If My Pregnancy App Says I'm Further Along?
Today's pregnancy apps are amazing and can help you follow your baby's development.
However, they cannot determine exactly when ovulation, fertilization, or implantation occurred.
Even wearable devices that estimate ovulation cannot replace ultrasound measurements.
That's why your first ultrasound is often the most accurate way to confirm how far along your pregnancy is.
Our Promise at True Ultrasound
We understand how emotional an early pregnancy ultrasound can be.
If you come in expecting to see a heartbeat but your pregnancy appears to be a little earlier than expected, we won't leave you wondering.
If your ultrasound shows a healthy pregnancy in the uterus but it's simply too early to see the heartbeat, we'll invite you back for a complimentary follow-up scan so you can experience that incredible first heartbeat.
Because your peace of mind matters.
When Should You Schedule Your First Ultrasound?
If your goal is to see your baby's heartbeat, around 6 to 7 weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period is generally a good time for many pregnancies.
However, every pregnancy develops at its own pace, and sometimes a repeat scan is needed if you're earlier than expected.
